If you watch my videos, or read my blog regularly, then you will know that I own a Mac mini. And, if you know anything about Mac minis, you will be aware of the tiny, mono speaker which is built into them. I’ve been using that speaker for around 9 months now so I decided it was time to upgrade. Therefore, I bought the Logitech Z-4i Speakers.

I was very impressed with the delivery speed of the speakers. I ordered them from Misco on Monday evening, and they arrived on Wednesday morning. The box was quite a size, much bigger than what I was expecting. The first thing I came to in the box was the subwoofer, followed by the two satellites. The speakers are quite tall speakers compared to some small computer speakers on the market, but are very thin and look really good, especially next to the Mac mini and my Apple Mouse and Keyboard.

The Logitech Z-4 and Z-4i’s come with a wired remote control. This sits on your desk and from it you can control the volume, the amount of bass and also connect headphones into the audio-out jack or connect another audio source such as an MP3 player into the audio-in jack, or both at the same time if you want to.

The cable connecting the speakers to the subwoofer isn’t very long and was just long enough to reach from the speaker on my desk to the subwoofer on the floor at the side, which is about 1.5 meters away. You are, however, supposed to position the subwoofer under the desk, not at the side. I found it too big to put where my feet usually go, but that’s only because my desk is small and there are drawers at the side and shelves at the other, leaving a small space to start with.

The sound quality of the speakers is excellent. Occasionally, when the bass is turned up, the subwoofer sounds slightly detached from the speakers. It sounds as though the speakers are separate and connected to a different audio source. Generally, however this is not a problem.

The speakers give out a very sharp and crisp sound, if that’s the right way to describe it. It’s not a soft tone. At first this sounded strange with some songs, but after a few days I got used to it. I find them great for listening to videos on YouTube and using apps like iMovie and GarageBand.

If you play a lot of games on your computer, and like an excessive amount of bass, then you will probably want speakers a little more powerful, but for £50 speakers they are quite powerful.

Overall, I think these speakers are great. They’re by far the best speakers I’ve ever listened too and don’t look out of place on my desk. They match Apple products perfectly, and if your equipment is black, then you can just as easily get the Z-4’s. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a 2.1 speakers set for around £50 (I’m not really sure how much they are in other countries).

You can get these speakers now through Amazon.co.uk! By doing so, you will be getting some superb speakers and supporting jak-e.com.
